FAQs

We know that taking your little one swimming can be a bit daunting at first, but we’re here for you every step of the way. To help you feel prepared, we’ve answered the most commonly asked questions.

Does my baby need to have their immunisations before they come swimming?

No. You can take your baby swimming at any age, both before and after they have been vaccinated. It doesn’t matter if they haven’t yet completed their course of vaccinations. Full NHS guidelines can be viewed here.

What does my child need to wear to come swimming?

We have a strict double nappy system which we ask all swimmers to follow. As well as a paper swimming nappy (Huggies little swimmers or similar) we ask that all children who are not toilet trained also wear a “Happy Nappy”. These can be purchased from us or online at: www.splashabout.com.

If your baby is younger than 12 weeks or weighs less than 12lbs, we recommend purchasing a wetsuit for your baby. This helps smaller babies keep cosy and happy in the pool.

Should I feed my baby before swimming?

If your baby is still on a milk diet, it is fine to feed them before they come swimming. A hungry baby is an unhappy baby, and we want this to be an enjoyable experience for you both. Once babies move onto a solid diet, we recommend leaving an hour from eating to going swimming – if possible.

What should I bring to class?

  • Swimming costume for mum or dad
  • Swim nappy and Happy Nappy for baby (once toilet trained toddlers do not need this). If you are unsure what a Happy Nappy is, please watch our short YouTube video. Happy Nappies can be bought at the swim centre at a cost of £10. We also stock the Happy Nappy Duo which is a Happy Nappy with a liner which does not need a disposable swim nappy. The Duo cost is £17.
  • Towel for baby and one for the swimming adult (please take these to poolside as it is cold when you come out the warm pool room!)
  • Clean nappy for after class (but if you forget just ask us!)
  • Wipes
  • Warm clothes for after swimming – a babygrow or onesie is ideal for baby
  • Plastic bag for wet clothes
  • Dummy if baby uses one
  • Snack/bottle as swimming is hard work and makes us all hungry (we are absolutely happy for babies to be fed in our reception area after classes if needed)
  • £1 for locker

Do I need to be able to swim to bring my baby?

No. Our pool is 1.3m deep so you will always be able to stand in the pool. You will never be asked to participate in any activity you are not comfortable doing.

Where are you located?

Fife Swim Centre is located at 1C Dewar House, Enterprise Way, Dunfermline, KY11 8PY. When you come into the swim centre, we ask you to leave your outdoor shoes on the rack provided to help keep the floors clean within the centre. You are very welcome to bring along flip flops etc to wear inside the centre if you prefer.

Can I bring my car seat / buggy?

Car seats can be left in reception or the changing areas and buggies can be left under the canopy at the front door.

Can both parents attend classes?

Bringing your baby swimming is a special time and we are always happy for both parents to come along. We only allow one parent to come into the water, but the other is welcome to spectate on poolside.

Can I bring spectators?

Space for spectators is limited so we do allow one spectator per child on poolside during class. You may be asked to leave 5 mins before the end of the class to allow the next swimmers to come up, but you can watch the end of the class on our screen in reception so you don’t miss any of the action.

What happens if I can’t attend a class?

You can use the customer portal to mark yourself absent for class and this will then allow you to book a catch-up class, if available. It is worth noting that these are not always available and are restricted to 3 per term.

How many children are in each class?

The majority of our classes run with 8 swimmers per class. For Octotots, there are 8 swimmers to 1 teacher in the pool. For Octokidz classes we have 8 children to 2 instructors in the pool. Occasionally we do have classes with 9 swimmers attending.
